Adventures in Italia: Firenze, Lucca, and Pisa

Being a photographer, it’s probably not a surprise that I really love to travel. At the end of last summer, I made the decision that, come March, I’d spend a week alone in Italy- number one on the list of places I want to visit. Well, March has come and gone, and last week I finally got to hop on a plane and go! That week was so much better than anything I could have imagined. Traveling, especially solo (in my opinion), is such a rewarding experience and I’m hoping this kind of trip will be an annual thing from here on out. What’s more, I’ve completely fallen in love with Italy… the people (I met so many wonderful people), the culture, the language (I’m getting better- thanks, Michel Thomas learn-in-your-car CDs!), the food (oh my goodness, focaccia bread is everything). I want to see all of Europe, but I also have so much of Italy left to see (and revisit)… maybe next time I need to stay for more than a week!

My first two days were in Florence, Lucca, and Pisa. Aside from going to a few museums in Florence, I did a ton of wandering around and exploring, mainly around the Oltarno (the arts district across the river where my apartment was). Here’s some of the things I saw…

The next day it was on to Lucca, a city that’s just an hour’s train ride away from Florence and is unusual for the intact walls that surround it. Once important for protection and military use in the Renaissance era, you can now rent a bike and ride around the ramparts, looking down at the city below. Lucca is so charming and I definitely preferred it to the bustling city life you find in Florence.

After spending most of the day in Lucca, I stopped by Pisa for dinner and met up with a local friend of a friend who showed me around…

And this was only my first two days! Stay tuned…
